Conowingo Dam - November 2010

Conowingo Dam is on the lower Susquehanna river northeast of Baltimore, Maryland and is a great place to see and photograph a number of bird species. November is peak time for Bald Eagles.

I woke up at 3am one Sunday, late in November and drove two and a half hours from my home in Virginia to the dam based on reports that the eagles were present in large numbers and active. I arrived about half an hour before sunrise and set up my gear (Canon 20D, 500mm F4 L IS lens and 1.4x TC). Soon, many more photographers joined me:

The eagles were indeed present, however, they were keeping their distance on the electrical towers and not very active. The thousands of black vultures were happy to pose for the photographers:

And a cormorant or two were happy to fly past:

Still the Bald Eagles remained far in the distance, happily perched on the towers or the dam itself. One did fly up behind us and perch in an oak tree, and after four hours of freezing and waiting here is the best shot I came away with:

5 hours round trip, 4 hours in the cold and zero shots I'm happy with. Will I try again? Sure. hopefully next time they'll be a bit more active and a bit more close.
